I LOVE to find great uses for things that I already have around the house!
And if you are like me, you'll love this project; an easy and fun way to give greeting cards a whole new life! It is wonderful to receive greeting cards, and some of them are so beautiful, that it is almost painful to throw them away, but at the same time, it is almost impossible to hold on to all of them.
I know that some people prefer to keep every greeting card they receive, but, if like me, you only keep some of them, keep those that you about to discard and easily give them new life, and turn them into beautiful and practical items you can really use!
We'll be turning used greting cards into beautiful
Gift card holders
This is a project that you can do with any occasion greeting cards, and you'll be surprised at how easy it is. I promise you'll love the results!
FOR GIFT TAGS AND BOOKMARKS
All you need is:
Decorating thread and ribbons
Pencil (to mark the lines)
*For this project, in order to get pretty straight-cut lines, it's best to use a straight cutter, guillotine, or x-acto knife (which is what I used), but I listed scissors, simply because it is something everyone has. If you are an avid crafter, then most likely you already have one of these items; if you are a beginner you can still get perfect straight lines if you mark them with a pencil and the cut them with regular scissors.
Make sure that the cards you choose, do not have any handwriting behind the front part of the card, like the one shown above, as this is the part of the greeting card you are going to be using.
Look at the greeting cards, and based on your personal taste, select the sections that have either a message, or a picture you like, and that can become a tag or a bookmark.
As you know, gift tags and bookmarks come in many sizes, so there is no right or wrong when it comes to the size you are cutting them. Different sizes are great, because they can be matched to different gift sizes.
From the greeting cards above, I created three gift tags, and one book mark.
To make it simple, you can cut them all in straight-line shapes; squares and/or rectangles, but if you prefer to be a little fancier, you can use the template provided below, to create a hexagon-shaped tag that you also use as template for a bookmark.
Next, punch a hole on the top center of each one to turn them into gift tags and/or bookmarks.
I used a 1/8 in. hole puncher, but if you don't have a small size like this one, you can use a regular paper hole puncher.
Last, but not least, add pretty metallic thread to each gift tag, and a ribbon to the bookmark, through the hole you just punched.
If you have very good penmanship, you can choose a section of the card with no words to create the bookmark, and write a unique and special message on it.
If you don't, you can opt to select a section of the card that includes a message, or simply leave it blank.
Bookmarks are a great idea, especially if you like to give books as gifts.
If you give an actual Christmas book as a gift, it would be a perfect idea to match it with a Christmas bookmark!
GIFT CARD HOLDER
If any of the greeting cards have a big blank space inside, like this one, you can easily turn it into a gift card holder.
I'd love to hear your thoughts! Drop a line or two below, and share what you think of this project. Do you have some ideas of your own to recycle greeting cards?
