DON'T Throw Away Your Expired Store Coupons . . . YET!
It all really started by pure accident one day at Dick's Sporting Goods many years ago. I was buying soccer items for our kids, and I was so happy about the very good coupons I had with me! I was about to get the deal of the year, because they accept a combination of qualifying coupons on the same purchase!
When the cashier asked me if I had any coupons (a question that you rarely get from anyone at any store, ever) I happily said, yes I do! To my dismay, when I pulled the coupons out, I just noticed that they were expired by exactly one day! I almost cried, because it is quite pricey to buy regular-priced at their store. Sadly, I said: I thought I did , but they expired yesterday . . .
That's when he said: "Oh, don't worry, we can still take them" . . . the most beautiful words I have ever heard from a cashier!
And, from that day on . . .
I never throw away any expired coupon, unless I have already asked the manager!
This is list of some stores I have personally asked the manager, and they DO ACCEPT expired coupons; so DON'T throw them away!
American Eagle (I have been lucky in some stores)
Chuck E Cheese
Dick's Sporting Goods
Bed Bath & Beyond
(Amazing Update for Bed Bath & Beyoond!)
Some of you might already know this, but for all the rest that did not know (like me), here it is!
I just discovered and amazing insider's tip from BBB! I just could not believe it! This tip came directly from one of BBB managers, so it is absolutely legit!
As you might know, some BBB stores have a beauty section (pharmacy style section), that includes shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, store-brand make up, etc.
So, I was dumbfounded when she told me that they take regular manufacturer's coupons on those items, along with their own store coupons!!!!!
Isn't that wonderful?—That means that if you have one of their coupons, and combine it with a manufacturer's coupon/s, you will walk away with an amazing deal!
Even more, she also told me that if you have one of the $5 on a $15 purchase coupon, and the total of the purchase is off $15 by couple of cents, they will still take the coupon!
So there you have it . . . another fantastic frugal tip that will allow you to save even more at BBB!
Don't be embarrassed to ask, but be professional, and polite; every time I do ask, this is how I ask the manager:
Hi, I know that some stores like XXX honor their expired coupons, does your store do? — What is the worse that can happen? That s/he'll say, sorry, but we don't? So, at least you tried!
If you are a little daring like me, and you don't want to ask, you can just give the coupon to the cashier, and let them tell you the system is not taking it because it is expired. The reason? I found out that even though coupons show a printed expiration date on it, many of them have a grace period embedded in the bar code. So, I have tried this method before, and when if it comes back as expired, I just say: oh, sorry about that, I didn't realize it was expired!! ☺
So there you go . . .
Next time, ask, especially if it is a high-value coupon that you really intended to use, but you missed the date!
Come back often to see updates; I'll add additional stores to this list, as I discover them!

Note: This article applies only to department store coupons, not grocery coupons, as I have never found any store that honors expired coupons, other than overseas military commissaries. However, I have recently learned that some grocery coupons have a grace period on the bar code, so, if you don't mind, you can always try, and let them know that it is expired.
